St Eloi Church, a magnificent 16th century church - notice the many bullet scars and several massive chunks blasted out of its Gothic columns - a reminder of war's dispassionate mauling.

The main square is devoted to the towns most famous citizen - Jean Bart, a 17th-century privateer. Captured by the British, held in Plymouth but then escaped in a rowing boat and sculled across the Channel to Brittany and freedom.

Port Museum - maritime history of Dunkirk - France's third largest port. Tall Ship Duchesse Anne moored to the quayside.

Memorial du Souvenir exhibits the history of Operation Dynamo - the 1940 evacuation of Allied troops.

The Palace of the Universe and Science - an interactive journey from the origins of the universe to the present day.
