Les Sables d’Olonne - Facts

Description:

This attractive port in the North Eastern sector of the Bay of Biscay, has become better known through its hosting of the Vendee Globe Round the World yacht race.

The town is an interesting mix of holiday resort, fishing port and yacht harbor. Some of the world's best sea salt is produced here, using traditional methods. It is also home to several interesting museums, including one on shell fish.

Cruiser Highlights:

The large marina of Port Olona provides all necessary yachting services including boatyard and chandleries. Provisions close by and good rail connections for crew changes.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

This part of the coast has many off-lying rocks. In strong SW winds, there can be breaking waves off the entrance to the port.
