Port Sudan - Boatyards

Apr 01, 2013

Repair facilities are very limited, although some workshops can undertake simple repairs. An Industrial Zone (Mantega Sena Alya, in Arabic), located on the western outskirts of Port Sudan, west of the Central Police Station, has a number of workshops specialising in mechanical and electrical repairs, welding and metalwork.

The Government Dockyard, located at the top end of the channel separating East and West Town, has the only repair facilities for boats. There are three slipways, the largest capable of handling vessels up to 1500 tons. There is also a crane capable of lifting up to 30 tons.

A small boatbuilding yard operates at the western end of the harbour, close to the Sea Scouts building, where sailing dhows are pulled up ashore. The skilled shipwrights will do carpentry work.
