St. Helena - Transport

Feb 02, 2026

Taxis

A number of taxis are in operation, frequenting Jamestown on weekdays and Fridays/Saturdays. Taxi numbers are available from the St Helena Tourism website or the Tourist Office in Jamestown (local establishments and local people will also lend a hand providing taxi numbers).

Ferry

See the Jamestown page for details on the ferry service within the anchorage and Fees for the costs.

Walking

While the terrain of the island means steep inclines are involved in walking pretty much anywhere, walking (especially in Jamestown or between Jamestown and Half Tree Hollow, the two main economic/residential hubs of the island) is a good means of transport. However, note that pedestrian sidewalks are few and there is infrequent wheelchair accessibility.

Buses

Public bus services are available. The maximum fare for a roundtrip is around £4/person. The Tourist Office in Jamestown has hard copies and can assist with bus schedules.

Car Hire

Visitors have the option of booking rental cars. It costs from £15/ day depending on renter and car type. The Tourist Office in Jamestown can help arrange car rental. Booking in advance is advised especially during peak visitor season from November - April.

Flights

There are weekly flights from Johannesburg and monthly flights to and from Ascension Island. An additional midweek flight operating on Tuesday will commence 07 December 2024 to end of February 2025, with Saturday flights out of Cape Town to St Helena and Tuesday flights from OR Tambo, Johannesburg. In March 2025 weekly flights resume from OR Tambo. Visit the www.flyairlink.com for flight bookings.
