St. Helena - Money

Feb 02, 2026

St Helena Pound (£) of 100 pence, is fixed on parity with Pound Sterling (£). Sterling notes and coins can be used everywhere on the island, but change is given in St Helena Pounds.

Other currency accepted in note form only is South Africa Rand, United States Dollar and Euros. When these currencies are used, change is given in St Helena Pounds.

Before leaving, all cash should be changed back to Sterling, as St. Helena notes are not valid outside of St. Helena and Ascension Island.

Personal bank cards are only accepted at a small number of locations on the island. Cards accepted are VISA, VISA Debit, Mastercard and Maestro.

Getting Money

There are no ATMs on the island.

There is one bank in Jamestown, the Bank of St Helena. This offers a Cash Advance Service (5% local bank fees). See Banks for further info.

St. Helena Tourist Card

  • The Bank of St Helena offers a Virtual Prepaid GBP Cash Card called the Tourist Card, that allows visitors to tap into the local card services on St Helena Island (known locally as St Helena Pay). The Tourist Card is available on a mobile device and topped up using a personal card (e.g. Visa). When you depart, the remaining balance can be unloaded back to your personal card.
  • See this news item for more details.
  • Due to the internet limitations on the Island, it is recommended to register and load the card and download the App before travelling.
  • When using the tourist card, ask for cashback with every transaction you make in the shops / restaurant. In this way you can get cash too, without paying the 5% local bank fees +  percentage of your personal bank fees.
  • More and more businesses are using the tourist card, however some - including the Port Captain - only take cash payment and won't accept the card.
  • When an internet connection is available, it is possible to check your balance on the card and a list of all the places you have made payments.

Best recommendation: Arrive at the island with enough British pounds to pay any immigration fees. Then go straight to the bank and get enough cash on a visa advance to spend during your time.
