Papua New Guinea - Yachting Essentials

Oct 24, 2025

Electricity:

Voltage: 240 V

Frequency: 50 Hz

Water:

It is very difficult to find available potable drinking water here.

Fuel:

Vessels traveling west or east to/from Kavieng in Papua New Guinea and Jayapura in Indonesia, a distance of some 670 nautical miles, should note refueling opportunities are limited. Manus is an option if fuel is needed.

Provisions:

Once out of the main towns, provisioning for anything other than a few fresh vegetables and fruit is impossible. Even the towns have very limited supplies except for canned spam, corned beef, and tuna.

Navigation Hazards:

If travelling the north coast of Papua New Guinea - beware of floating logs and trees in the water between Biak in West Papua, Indonesia and the outer islands.  Cruisers have reported large pieces of isolated timber and then whole trees in tide lines over 70 nm from the mainland of West Papua. Some of these timber strewn tide lines reported to be over two miles long.  Read the following report from March 2025.
