Djibouti Security

Overall Crime and Safety

Cruisers report that the Djibouti port area and city are very safe and the locals friendly.

As with any port area/city - be cautious of petty crime like pickpocketing and theft, and exercise caution by not walking alone at night, avoiding the display of valuables, and keeping originals of important documents secure.

Current security advice is to check a travel advisory site such as the UK FCO website.

See this 2023 report from Hans and Imma Gellinger on SV Tuvalu on the safety aspects of sailing the Red Sea to a Suez Canal transit:

Piracy and the Red Sea Transit

Current advice for sailing vessels from the Maritime Security Centre Horn of Africa (MSCHOA) can be found at our Piracy and Security page under the Gulf of Aden/Indian Ocean/Red Sea section.
