Access to Abrolhos Archipelago

The archipelago is heavily regulated and permits are required - details below. Snorkeling is reported to be excellent and there is abundant birdlife.

Navy Permit

  • Ilha de Santa Barbara is the largest island and houses a Brazilian navy outpost and a lighthouse. It's possible to visit the lighthouse.
  • A navy permit is required to land on Santa Barbara, take a lighthouse tour and visit the beach etc.
  • Contact: ramon.filho@salvador.ba.gov.br

National Park Permit [ICMBio]

  • This is required to access the waters of the archipelago and land on the 2 islands (with an escort). It gives you access to be in the park (everything except Santa Barbara).
  • Contact: visita.parnabrolhos@icmbio.gov.br
  • Via VHF you can request a tour of Ilha Siriba, which officially is the only island open to visitors, however, you may have luck in getting a tour of Ilha Redonda.
