Rio Grande - Facts

May 31, 2019

Description:

Lying approximately 300NM NE of Montevideo, it is not to be confused with the Rio Grande do Sul or Rio Grande do Norte. Being just about 100NM from the border with Uruguay, it is a strategic destination. It is a good stop either going south or north, as well as a good stop on its own. The lake is really big and is a pleasant sailing ground. There are a lot of birds and sea lions there.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

A busy harbor with a difficult entrance, although the channel is wider than it appears. A 4 or 5-knot tide can run out of the entrance after persistent northerlies and it can be very rough.

If conditions are suspect, it is advisable to contact Rio Grande Pilot Station VHF 16/09 when outside of the outer jetties, for current conditions.

Position:

32°11.93'S, 52°04.43'W (harbour entrance)
