Description:
Green Turtle Cay is one of the Abaco "Out Islands" and can only be reached by boat or ferry. New Plymouth is the main settlement and was founded in the 18th Century.
The port of New Plymouth has no marina or yacht dockage, just a good anchorage that offers protection from easterly winds and two options for dinghy docks. There are several reasonable stores in the main street, for hardware and food.
Elsewhere on Green Turtle Cay there is good hurricane shelter with Black Sound being the best option. Black Sound has a boatyard and 4 small marinas/docking facilities.
White Sound has two fair sized marinas (Bluff House and Green Turtle Club).

Entrance Notes and Cautions:
To get into the sounds is a bit tricky and certainly getting into Black Sound should best be done at HW. There are mooring balls available in both Black and White Sounds as holding is poor.

Despite prior information , Green Turtle Cay is again a Port of Entry for the Bahamas. Customs/immigration staff are onsite at the Green Turtle Club Resort and Marina in White Sound. Check in was quick and easy as of January 2025.
We are presently here in Green Turtle Cay with our sailing vessel, Samana. Please note – There is no longer any Customs and Immigration in New Plymouth since the Customs office was destroyed by the hurricane.
Customs and Immigration has been relocated at China Harbour on Great Abaco Island. This is a commercial harbour just north of Cooperstown and is shown in the Explorer Chartbook. Their hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays.
Harbour entrance is wide and deep. Just enter and tie up on the wall. Looking straight back from the wall you will find the office. Very easy clearance procedure.
Update for Green Turtle Cay by Bahamas Chatter – 12 October, 2019:
Construction has already begun to restore homes and businesses and clear endless piles of debris. There is no water or electricity in the town. Some people have their own generators. Relief efforts continue with locals and outside volunteers coming in to help with construction, food, medical care, etc. The school miraculously survived as a shelter for the entire town until after the hurricane passed. The road that extends the length of the cay is open. Freight boats have been coming in with supplies and construction crews. A BobCat loader was donated to help fill the dump trucks with massive piles of debris. Watermakers has come in to help with supplying bottled drinking water for the islanders and construction crews. Also crews have set up a kitchen for workers with basic meals.
