Peniche - Facts

Mar 20, 2025

Where is Peniche?

Peniche is one of the largest traditional fishing ports in Portugal and lies just over 100km north of Lisbon.

The large harbour is sheltered by the prominent headland, which until the mid 18th century was an island, but silting has now joined it to the mainland. The town is well-known for its consistent surfing conditions and its lace-making. There is a lively fishing fleet here and lots of great restaurants, as well as a wonderful beach and very reasonable marina. Many cruisers stop here and end up staying a while.

Entrance Notes and Cautions

  • The harbour is on the south side of the Peniche headland. From the north, most opt for the 5.5M wide channel between Ilha da Berlenga and Cabo Carvoeiro - however, tidal streams can make this an uncomfortable passage.
  • On the final approach from the west around Cabo Carvoeiro, the east breakwater light appears to the north of the west breakwater light. Approach the west breakwater within 50-100m and round in, the entrance is a little over 100m wide.
  • Great care should be taken when approaching or departing this harbour in high winds and surf. Listen to locals advice and do not attempt to enter or depart this port when conditions are not favourable.
  • Four dead as yacht capsizes off Peniche (November 2023)
  • No anchoring is permitted in the harbour.
  • Be prepared to tie up to other boats in the marina - visitor space is limited and prior booking is not possible.
  • Passing fishing boats give out wash, prepare well with fenders.
