Lahewa (Nias) - Facts

Jan 31, 2024

Description:

Lahewa is located on the NW tip of the island of Nias which is part of North Sumatra province. The area consists of 131 islands and Nias Island is the biggest. It is an internationally famous surfing destination with the best-known surfing area being Sorake Bay, close to the town of Teluk Dalam, on the southern tip.

Lahewa is a very protected harbour and the town is small and picturesque but has been stricken by earthquakes and tsunamis over the years.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

Getting to the town involves a fairly long motor but the channel is wide and averages 25metres deep.  Eyeball navigation is recommended as there are plenty of reefs in the area to be wary of.  Entry at night is not recommended.

Cruiser Highlights:

A well protected anchorage and safe to leave your boat if wanting to visit the island or if you need to do a visa extension which can be done at the Kantor Imigrasi in Gunungsitoli which is the 'capital' of Nias.  Allow about two and a half hours as the road is reported to be quite bad.

There will most likely be a market here where you might be able to buy fresh vegetables.

Position:

01° 24'52"N, 097° 10'38"E
