Makatea is dotted about with remarkable large relics of the phosphate mining that happened here till the mid 20th Century. The breakwater is a vestige of this industry, with rusting tanks and other machinery.
There are a few short tracks, spectacular view spots and a beach/reef/cliff walk on the eastern side of the island.
There are also fresh water caves where you can go swimming.
