Mopelia (Maupiha’a) - Docking

Jun 11, 2024

Anchoring on Mopelia:

Anchoring is essential as there are no mooring buoys.  Local (power) boats and va'a are pulled ashore or hoisted in grids.  Finding the right spot is tricky as there are many large coral heads in the lagoon.  Ensure you have good overhead sun when you anchor.

Take your time finding the right spot and try and anticipate where a wind change might take you.

Anchorages:

The two main anchorages are at the north and south ends of the large eastern motu.  Both are spacious with good holding in sand.  The northern one has scattered coral and there are a few old pearl farm buoys just below the surface approaching the southern anchorage.  Keep a good lookout.  It is also advisable to float your anchor.

The SE corner of the atoll is recommended but if the wind goes North, it's better to go to the NE corner where you can anchor off from the Raiohos' house.  The water colour clearly delineates the depth.
