Rapa - Docking

Jun 03, 2024

Anchorages and Moorings:

The main bay of Rapa Iti is infamous for tricky anchoring. Cruising guides mention ‘dead coral rubble’ at the bottom, the bay is very deep (20-30 m) and uneven. Many boats have dragged and fouled their anchors and chains here.

Large areas of the bay are indeed covered in live staghorn coral, especially the shallower parts that are inviting for anchoring as recovering fouled gear is easier in less depth.

Moorings:

In 2019, the community along with the crew of SY Pitufa installed a 2.5 ton mooring block with a 16 mm chain, 20 mm shackles and strong line which is available for sailboats in the bay of Huarei, to prevent fouled chains and save the coral from damage.

This mooring  is suitable for bigger boats up to 25 tons.

In 2022, a second mooring was installed in the bay, again due to the efforts of the community of Rapa along with the crews of SY Garulfo and SY Pitufa.

The mooring consists of two 750 kg blocks that are linked with 14 mm chain and a 25 mm rope goes up to the surface. It is well suited for yachts the size 41 ft, 12 tons or smaller.

GPS Position:  S 27° 36,700' W 144° 19,872'.

The moorings are not insured, but well made and regularly checked.  Please help by checking and maintaining the moorings if you visit. The community does not charge for the use, but donations to the mairie are highly appreciated.
