Mataura, Tubuai - Docking

Jun 03, 2024

Anchorages around Tubuai:

The main anchorage is east of the main village of Mataura on the norther side of the lagoon, that can be reached in a marked channel.  The rest of the lagoon is mostly uncharted and reported to be quite shallow.

It is better to anchor in the protection of the small dock, about 1 mile away, even if you may have to move your boat a little to let the Tahiti ferry dock there.  However, be aware of currents, swell and wind as there is not much protection.

There is also reported to be a protected anchorage south of the airport which is good in all wind directions from NE via E to SE according to SV Pitufa.  However they do recommend careful navigation on a sunny day with a look-out on the bow.
