There is a free anchorage opposite the City Marina in the Ashley River, which has been dredged improving the foul ground reported previously. Holding is good, even in the strong tidal stream. City Marina charge a nominal amount per day for use of their dinghy dock. They have laundry facilities on site.
Downriver past the Coast Guard station on the James Island side of the channel, it is also possible to anchor, however, this is some distance from the dinghy dock.

We came down the ICW. We couldn’t find a marina that had space for us in Charleston except for Toler’s Cove Marina in Mount Pleasant Tel : 843 881 0325 VHF 16
The staff were great and helped us into our mooring, all pontoons are long so we didn’t have to fight with the American style slips. Fuel available. Facilities are limited, one toilet on the fuel pontoon, which doesn’t flush well. $1.50 a ft, including water and electric.
Anchored off the City Marine in June 2018. Good holding, even in the tidal stream. marina charge $5 per day for use of the dinghy dock. Good laundry facilities above the Marina Restaurant. Used the Holy Spoke bicycle hire company and found them very good. What a great city!
On December 9, 2017, the City of Charleston is hosting the annual Charleston Harbor Christmas Parade of Boats in the Charleston Harbor from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The parade will begin in the vicinity of Anchorage A, continue up Bennis Reach beyond Patriots Point to the Ravenel Bridge, continuing around the east side of the Charleston peninsula, and will conclude at City Marina. Persons and vessels are prohibited from entering, transiting through, anchoring in, or remaining within the immediate parade area unless authorized by the Captain of the Port, Charleston or a designated representative.

We anchored in the Ashley River across from the marina for two weeks. In and out four or five times for day sails around harbor. Never had a problem. Remember though the ground is pluff mud so give the anchor a few minutes to settle in before testing it. We also anchored down river past the Coast Guard station on the James Island side of the channel with an awesome view of the Charleston Battery. Nice spot but far away from dinghy dock.
Update on the anchorage opposite marina. NB we are not anchored so cannot verify, but apparently the Port Officials have dredged outhe most of the fowl ground making the anchorage better
Slight update to information above on Charleston City Marina – we made landfall here in June 2014 and they were very welcoming to transient yachts, with excellent facilities and a free shuttle into town and the grocery store (although Charleston is very walkable). They placed us on the inside of the long mega-dock pontoon, and we were only disturbed rarely by the wash from passing power-boats. Although we usually anchor, personally I wouldn’t choose to use the ‘anchorage’ on the opposite shore to the marina as a sailboat sank there whilst we were there, and apparently another the week before i.e. it sounds like there is much to foul your anchor – be warned
