Tanzania Security for Yachts

When cruising Tanzania, particularly near Dar es Salaam, avoid any islands where more than a few fishermen are living in tents and temporary shelters. As in many parts of the world, theft tends to be focused mainly on outboard engines. Wherever you anchor, hoist your dinghy at night. Keep all engines padlocked to their transoms or deck mounts.

In Dar es, Salaam and other busy ports, it is recommended that you leave someone on board at all times.

Overall Crime and Safety

Violent crime such as assault, sexual assault, robberies, mugging, and carjacking occur. Police forces have limited resources to respond effectively to serious crime.

The US has a Level 2 travel advisory in place (5 Sep 2024): exercise increased caution for Tanzania due to crime, terrorism and targeting of LGB persons. The recommend not traveling to the Mtwara Region in southern Tanzania (near Mozambique) due to the threat of terrorism. Read the entire Travel Advisory linked below.
