Sri Lanka - Yachting Essentials

May 24, 2024

Electricity:

Voltage: 230 V
Frequency 50 Hz

Note: Electricity is expensive in Sri Lanka (up to US$450/month in Galle port).  Find out the costs from your agent before hooking up.

Water:

Avoid drinking tap water which is heavily chlorinated and contains micro bacteria which can cause stomach upsets.

Water is generally fine for washing and laundry but a filtration system is advisable for drinking. You will have to arrange for a water delivery via your chosen agent and normally the minimum amount is 1 tonne at a cost of US$12 (Galle port - May 2024)

Fuel:

Some of the tuk-tuk drivers will carry jerry cans of fuel but otherwise it is difficult to obtain.

LPG:

It is not possible to refill LPG bottles. There is a strict exchange policy, whereby you return an empty and get a full one. No filling service.

Getting Work Done:

There is no facility here for hauling out a boat for general work, however in an emergency the fishing co-op in Galle may be able to assist. It is the best place to find repair services and spare parts, although these are limited.  Your agent will be able to point you in the right direction.

Provisions:

Provisioning can be expensive in Sri Lanka because there is a Government imposed tax of 150%.  Galle is a busy tourist type town with good local seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables and a number of reasonable super markets and grocery shops.

Parcels and Shipments:

Customs charges are very high and may not release it to you or a courier company without fees being paid.  If heading to the Maldives, it may be advisable to send packages there which do not incur the same taxes as Sri Lanka.
