Gijon - Fees

Jun 03, 2020

Description:

The city of Gijón is situated on the coast of central Asturias ("Green Coast"), with Cantabria to the East and Galicia to the West.

Gijón is known as the capital of the "Green Coast". The port is located at the heart of the city's old quarter. For many centuries, this was the main entry point for commercial ships for the entire Iberian Peninsula.

It was built in 1480 and as activity at the port increased, so it expanded, with later docks being built on the western shore. Its shape is one of the most important examples of port engineering in Spain.

Gijón is a city that invites you to stroll through its streets, especially those of the old quarter next to the port. The Plaza del Márques is watched over by a statue of the conqueror king, Don Pelayo, who looks out to the port. The original old town, known as "Cimadevilla" lies inside a peninsular area, brimming with old colonial style houses and old fishermen's dwellings, with restaurants on every corner. The emblematic Clock Tower (Torre de Reloj) is one of the most attractive buildings in the quarter and is crowned by the Eulogy on the Horizon, a metallic sculpture by the artist Chillida, which reaches wide to embrace the sea. At the far north of the Cerro de Santa Catalina, the Eulogy has become a universal symbol for the city.
