Sant Carles de la Rapita - Docking

Jan 21, 2015

Puerto de Los Alfacs has two marinas, the older Club Nautico nearest to the town and the newer Sant Carles Marina operated by MDL. Both have good boatyards where it is possible to live and work on your own boat, for short periods, when ashore.

Being 2nm from the open sea and sheltered by Puerto de Los Alfacs, both marinas have good shelter. Prevailing winds are southerly but in winter there can be very strong northerly winds, spawned by a prolonged Mistral blowing in the Golfe du Lion, some way to the north.

Sant Carles Marina has a small liveaboard community, but being a little further north the weather is not as consistent as locations further to the south. There is a marina berth holders website which contains useful information - http://www.scmchat.com/scm2/

With the proximity of the rice fields and mussel farms, there are some mosquitos and the fouling is worse than many places. These will need to be managed during a stay of any duration.

In the town there is little or no concession to tourism from elsewhere in Europe and Spanish/Catalan is widely spoken. The local cuisine is quite different, being a fusion of sea and mountain, there are of course more mainstream restaurants. Patisserie is particularly good and authentic french bread and croissants are part of the local tradition, is baked fresh each morning. All amenities can be found in the town, including large supermarkets and chandlers.
