Malta Weather for Sailors

The climate is similar to North Africa, with extremely hot, dry summers and mild winters. It can get windy, often with torrential rain in the winter. Prevailing winds throughout the year are from the northwest, with a gale from the NW known as a Mistral.

In the summer typically the wind kicks in around midday with a gentle breeze, building to Force 4 or 5 throughout the afternoon and then easing at sunset. During July and August there are chances of a light southerly wind and intense heat, normally for a period of about 3 weeks. When the hot Sirocco wind blows from the SE, it comes laden with dust and conditions can be intolerable with greatly restricted visibility.

In the winter expect the occasional gale from the northeast (Gregale) that normally lasts several days and can reach up to a Force 10. As the main harbors are open to the NE, it can make conditions difficult.
