Cagliari's Elmas airport is 6km NW of the city and there are international flights from there during the summer months.
A frequent daily bus service connects the airport to the city centre (Piazza Matteotti).
There is now a direct rail link as well. Cost is 1.40 Euros per journey with 2 stops to the airport. Time: 10 mins approx. This service runs 2-3 times a day until approx. 11pm. After that time a taxi service must be used (25 Euros airport to city).

Has anyone been here lately – is there somewhere to drop off rubbish? Is it the cheapest place on the island to get fuel and supplies?
If staying for a while it is worth downloading the local bus app CTM, which looks like an elephant. You can buy a book of tickets on your phone. Each ticket is a little over a euro and is valid for 90 minutes, so you can change buses without using a new one. You validate it with your phone on the bus.
The nearest Lidl is a number 30 or 31 from the cemetery. We found Sardinia horribly expensive so used that bus a lot !
From very close to the marina a PF or PQ bus takes you into town. Cheapest beer off the shelf is at Conad or Lidl. Enotecas will fill plastic bottles with table wine for around 2.40 a litre. Spirits are generally very cheap.The market at Benedetto is fantastic.
We stayed at Marina del Sole, which is a complete dump, but cheap compared. Karalis is nearer the centre, but more expensive and we were told, has equally awful showers for which you pay extra.
There is a chandlers a bus stop past Lidl as well as Rinaldi, close to the marina, and Nautica Store, also close by. I thought they were expensive but then everything here seems to be.
The closest large DIY store, a la Leroy Merlin or B and Q, is Bricocenter at the Fenicotteri shopping centre.
I cannot comment on eating out but people rave about the Sardi food and love of same.
The amphitheatre, the main cemetery at Bonaria and Roman cemetery are worth a visit and the ruins at Pula, only 20 miles away, are a great day out. The nearest beach is at Poetto, easily accessible by boat, bicycle or bus, the PQ and PF again.
The Italian reputation with regard to queues is well justified !
We are wintering at Cagliari in Marina del Sole. We decided to fuel up to fill the tank for the winter and went to what seems the only recreational fuel dock, across the bay at Motomar. At the time of writing they charged more than 1.80 euro a litre, 50 per cent more than on street – 1.22 euro. If you can, fuel up by taking cans to a nearby roadside station
Covid Testing Cagliari
We arrived Saturday 17 October 2020 when arrivals from Spain, The Netherlands and the UK were required to have covid test 48 hours before or after arrival. No answers to any of the published telephone numbers, but we discovered that covid tests are carried out at the airport when flights from the applicable countries arrive.
€23 for a cab (+39 070 400 101) from Marina del Sole to the airport. We got there 30 min before a flight from Spain landed, just as the medical staff were setting up. 10 min later, free tests completed, results in 2-3 days.
We went to the health centre in Cagliari and were tested on spec. Cittadella della Salute, Building N. Take passport.

We just left Cagliari, which is the main city (and capital) in Sardinia.
We spent there 4 wonderful months docked at Portus Karalis.

We had some rainy and cold days but mostly beautiful weather. The town is very pretty and with lots of history and archeology. There is an old citadel on top of the hill built by the Romans and later developed by the Spaniards who colonized the island for more than 300 years.
http://www.areasardinia.com/sardegna/castello/castello?. The mistral is the predominant wind and for this reason Prada-Luna Rossa team and many Olympic teams come to practice. The marina is the most protected place from mistral of the entire Gulf of Cagliari. We went out every week end in 20 kts of mistral and loved it. The staff of Portus Karalis is very welcoming and speak good English. The prices are among the best in the entire island and you live downtown a beautiful city with lots of shops, markets and great affordable restaurant within 5 minutes walk. The perfect place to Winter in the Med!
Stayed a few nights at Marina del Sole. Friendly and helpful mooring assistance, although the fairway to the berth was narrow and a large yacht at the outer end intruded far into it. Bit disinterested guy in the office tent/bar. Mooring fee was €65 for a 12.5m monohull, but negotiable. Beware, prices on the website are from 2015 and no longer correct. Showers/toilets are in another tent – very basic, but everything actually works and is maintained. Security consists of an old dog with googly eyes snoozing in the sun. It was even more disinterested in anyone than the office guy. Lots of derelict abandoned looking boats, some with people living on them. A washing machine can be found in a dirty corner of the boatyard across the road. Supposedly cost €5 for a quick wash, but nobody was interested in collecting the money. Camping Gaz (€25 for R907 refill) available from a big pile of bottles (which occasionally falls over) behind the office desk.
Quite a walk into town and not much shade for most of it. There is a cycle path, but nowhere safe to leave your bike in town.
Lots of dead fish floating everywhere and stinking up the whole harbour – apparently a freshwater deluge had killed them. This seems to happen regularly. Dolphins showed up in the marina one afternoon!

Cagliari is the main port of Sardinia and we are made welcome at Portus Karalis Marina that is adjacent to the C & I and Harbour Master offices. This is most fortuitous, as I eventually made four visits there over three days trying to get clearance for my vessel, only being granted an audience when we were clearing out. We regarded this treatment as poor manners by the officials, which was exacerbated by the time they kept us waiting in the reception area.
The Marina manager was more organised with his paperwork and charged us a bargained Euro 75 per day, that included power, water and access to toilets. The amenities were rather frugal and charged a Euro for two minutes of hot water in the shower. We regard this as very ordinary in light of the furnishings of the Marina office and the tariffs imposed. This was ranked by Imray as charge-band 6, but we were advised that this was very much at the lower end of the scale for similar facilities to the North. It is rather irksome to be charged Hilton prices for pension facilities, and no option where there is no anchoring.
We stayed at Maina del Sole in Aug ’17 and payed 65 euros for a 12,1 m monohull. The staff was very helpful. if you need jobs done, just ask them and they will call someone or direct you where to go. We had canvas work done and a welding job. The facilities are run down and don’t do your laundry here. I payed 8 euros to use a normal sized machine in a dirty corner of the boat yard. The internet at the reception is super fast and the beers are cheap!
Marina del Sole. May 17. Inexpensive but a basic and rather run down place. The ‘office’is in a tent. But, friendly and helpful staff and water and electricity on the pontoons. The supermarket is 20 minutes walk away and Cagliari itself about 30 min. No security whatsoever. Simple, basic, no frills marina with prices to match.

We stayed end of October 2016 in Marina del Sole, around 50 Euros a night for a 13,80 monohull, including all facilities. It’s a little far to walk to the centre of town, but do-able.
Cagliari is not a good spot for repairs, no big shipyards (better go to Sant’ Antioco, the little island southwest of Sardinia. S.A.C.I.R.N. is the 2nd biggest shipyard and less expensive than the one in North Sardinia that caters more to bigger yachts).
A direct train now connects Cagliari with the airport. Tickets 1.40 per trip, 2 stops, 7 minutes, runs 2-3 times a day until around 11 pm. If your plane arrives after 11 pm the only way to get to the marina is by taxi (25 Euros to the city).
