Fiji Weather for Sailors

Fiji has a mild tropical climate. From May to November the SE trades blow, making it cooler and drier, while the summer months from November to April are wet and humid. Viti Levu and Vanua Levu can have a lot of rain and Suva are renowned for sudden but short torrential downpours.

Cyclone Season:

Cyclones occur during the period from November to April.

The Fiji Meteorological Service is the official body for cyclone monitoring and naming for all cyclones in the SW Pacific. Fiji Met has an advanced cyclone warning system that is very well monitored. Fiji Met keeps regular updates on their website as well as sending weather bulletins by email if requested.

There are very few cyclone holes in Fiji and these quickly fill up with local boats. See this useful report about two cyclone holes of interest to cruisers. Denarau Marina have cyclone holes listed on pages 12 and 13 of their Cyclone Procedures Booklet.
