Christmas Island Yachting Essentials

Electricity:

  • 240 volts
  • 50hz

Note:  island electricity is generated by diesel plants in the island's power station.  Australian plugs are used - international visitors may need an adapter if wanting to charge up any mobile or electronic devices while on the island.

Water:

Tap water is safe to drink.  Water is available at Flying Fish Cove.

Fuel:

Diesel and unleaded petrol are available at the service station at Flying Fish Cove.

LPG:

LPG cylinders are available from the supermarket in Flying Fish Cove.

Repairs and Marine Supplies:

Getting work done: The island contractors are resourceful but not many are marine focused.  Repairs can be carried out but the nearest boat repair facility is at Cocos Keeling on Home Island (Cocos Keeling) and is for emergency work only.

Importing Parts/Spares: Many products are flown or shipped to the island and prices reflect this. It may be possible to source spare parts but there are not many marine focussed businesses.  There are regular flights from Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia so it may be possible to have goods shipped in on one of these commercial flights.  Check with Customs officials as they will be able to advise you on the process.

Provisions:

Many products are flown or shipped in to the island and prices reflect this. Avoid buying all but the necessities.  However, there is a good hardware store at Poon Saan if you do need anything.
